Good Skin Care is a Habit… Bet on It

If you lose a lot of money at the poker table, sue somebody.

At least that’s what one gambler, who lost $674,000 at Detroit’s Motor City Casino, seems to think.  He’s suing the casino for allowing him to gamble at cards, slots and gaming tables.  He admits that  he’s addicted to gambling, and now wants the casino to repay his losses.

In my opinion, it’s not the casino’s fault.  This loser (no pun intended) needs to accept responsibility for his own actions.  So let’s face the facts.

I don’t think that anyone has ever lost $674,000 on skincare products.  That’s not my point.  But I don’t want you to waste $67.40 on skincare products either.   Your success with a skincare regimen depends not only on  the products, but on your discipline (a cleanser and a moisturizer are not enough!), your patience (wash your face for two minutes, and don’t expect overnight miracles!) and your persistence (every night, whether you’re tired or not!).

Surely you know people who have joined a gym, and then never go again.  Buying a skincare system, and then not using it regularly, is not much better.

Don’t buy ZO Skin Health products (or any other brand) if you’re not going to use them regularly and properly.  You’re wasting the products, time, and most importantly, your money.  Make good skin are a habit.  Accept responsibility.  It’s up to you.

The Next Big Thing

Frito-Lay sells $600 million per year in Doritos® corn chips, and they have a Research and Development team of 230 people.  You’re probably thinking– what do 230 scientists do, researching a corn chip? Their biggest responsibility is developing a flavor bigger and better than Cool Ranch.  They think about it in test kitchens, laboratories, and market research focus groups.  They’ve been working on that lofty goal for 12 years, and although Frito-Lay has launched at least 20 flavors since then, they still haven’t developed anything that tops Cool Ranch.

So let’s face the facts.  Big ideas don’t come from great big committees.  Great ideas come at crazy times,  when you’re laying awake at night, when you catch a view of yourself in the rear view mirror, and when you’re talking to your best friend.

I thank my many patients  who have shared their ideas.  They’ve told me what they’re concerned about, what works, what doesn’t, and what keeps them awake at night.  They’ve inspired some great ideas, and shared their own  random thoughts.  The patients that I have met over my 30 years in practice have been the biggest and best think-tank in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I used to get by with only 3 steps (cleanse, tone, moisturize), but have been advised to start using products for hyper-pigmentation. While I have seen some results, it is a lot of steps, and I wonder if all this layering is actually good for my skin. Can you recommend a line with fewer steps?
KD, Waller, TX

A:  Oops.  You want me to recommend FEWER steps, and I’m going to recommend MORE steps!  I’m not being contradictory, but doing as you ask would not necessarily be doing you any favors.

Some day there may be one product that cleanses-tones-activates-stimulates-moisturizes-protects. But not soon. Just look how long it has taken companies like Revlon and P&G to develop a single product that both shampoos and conditions. Even though a shampoo/conditioner has been on the market for 20+ years, it has never caught on in the US (partially because of the difficulty of combining the raw materials and active ingredients, partially because it’s not as efficient at either cleansing or conditioning).

Ditto with skincare products. If we combined too many active ingredients, one would invariably de-activate or de-stabilize another. Plus there can’t be one generic skincare product, because there isn’t one generic skin type.  People’s needs are different.

There are several things wrong with the regimen you mention—(1) you’re missing what dermatologists consider to be the most important step—sunscreen.  It’s critical for both younger-looking as well as healthier skin.  (2) to avoid pigmentation issues, elasticity problems, lines and wrinkles, you need to stimulate the skin cells.  For this you need active Vitamin A—and peptides, growth factors and anti-oxidants, (3) using a moisturizer, while excluding some of these other ingredients, will make your skin cells lazy and function improperly.  Don’t make that mistake!

Not to worry about too much layering—your skin will appreciate the attention that it gets.  Just make sure to apply the products in the right order—from lightest to heaviest—so that they can be absorbed properly.

So I can’t recommend just one product—but you may want to try a kit—The ZO Skin Health DNA Repair kit combines the most important products—all at a value-price.

High Tech/High Touch

Blogs, webinars and podcasts are great ways of sharing information, and enable me to interact with people all over the world.  I love the interaction, collaboration, and speed of deployment made possible online.  It’s great to be able to download pictures and share files anywhere, anytime.

But I don’t believe that the web will ever be a suitable replacement for a one-to-one professional consultation. Sometimes high tech can’t beat high touch.  That’s why my team and I are meeting with people at selected Nordstrom stores over the next several months.  So that we can hear from you, and so that you can listen to us.  After all, that’s why I got into this profession.

I hope you can join at one of the following:

Beauty Indulgences

We all have our indulgences.  For me, it’s an occasional cappuccino—none of the double macchiato, grande, extra whip stuff, though. And I do like a real nice pen.  In stressful times, we all need an occasional indulgence.

So I was happy that Felicia  Sullivan reported in the Huffington Post yesterday that Oraser Microderm Hand Renewal was one of her top 10 Beauty Indulgences. Here’s what she said:

ZO Skin Health Oraser Microderm Hand Renewal (1oz $50): With regard to a beauty indulgence, I never gave my hands much thought as I considered them solely practical tools meant to complete daily tasks. However, as I grow older I’ve come to respect the most important and most overlooked part of my skin care regimen. Coupled with a recent plague of dry, cracked hands, I turned to the crown jewel of hand exfoliants. Formulated with retinol, shea butter and sugar crystals, a quickly daily exfoliating routine will gently scrub away rough, dull skin and keep your hands feeling ultra-rich. It also minimized the appearance of scratches (courtesy of my ferocious feline) and sloughed away and softened skin that had been peeling.

To see her other nine recommendations, check out  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/felicia-c-sullivan/covet-falls-top-10-beauty_b_278340.html

The Microderm Hand Renewal is one of the  few products that is both nice and necessary.  Now that I admitted to my indulgences, I’m curious—what do you like to splurge on for your mental and physical health?
