Hi, Kira:

Thanks for asking, but we at ZO Skin Health are separate from the company that makes Obagi Nu-Derm (Obagi Medical Products), and therefore do not represent their products or regimen. Dr. Obagi was a founder of both companies, but no longer is associated with Obagi Medical Products. I therefore suggest that you speak with a physician or other skincare professional for medical advice.

Thanks for asking; I am sorry that I cannot be of more assistance.

Hello Sandra
I purchased the whole Nu-Derm System and am 1 month in to it...loving the results so far! I use Tretinoin 0.05% and I think its working with minimal irritation...Do I have to bump the strength it up to 0.1% to take the full advantage of the system? My work is public and am not sure if I would feel good peeling all over though...
Pls advise!
Thanx in advance:-))

Hi Sandra,
Your advise is terrific and I love receiving advise on how to properly use and/or further enhance the benefits from using Obagi nuDeerm and the ZO Skin Health products, as I have been on Maintenance now for 3 years.
I was reading a question that another NuDerm client experienced regarding conflicting directions given to her by dermatologists who she saw. As I have experienced the similar situation with three different MDs, one of which I saw originally and decided I'd give a second chance only to hear the same song.

As a patient, thanks to the resources Dr. Obagi, yourself, Donna and the rest of the staff have made available to us we can educate ourselves with your help, for those of us unable to be treated at your clinics.

Thank you for the wonderful products, nothing else has gone on my face but Obagi products for over three years now and many applause to you all!

Fondly, Anne

Hi, Michelle:

Let's get it sorted out.
I'm not employed by Obagi Medical Products (the company that makes Obagi Nu-Derm and Condition and Enhance), but from what I understand, the Nu-Derm line and the Condition and Enhance lines are practically identical. Condition and Enhance is generally recommended to prepare skin for a surgical procedure or peel (that's referred to as Conditioning) and after surgery to help maintain the result (that's what is meant by Enhancing)

In the US, medications containing 4% hydroquinone (like Obagi Clear, Tri-Luma and EpiQuin Micro) are available with a prescription. Higher concentrations are not commercially available.

Do you know what brand (with 4% hydroquinone) you were using? It's really important to use such an aggressive product with medical supervision. And you're right, an SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen with a physical sunblock should be used every day, and throughout the day with prolonged sun exposure. It was irresponsible for your aesthetician to not have given you proper instructions.

Have you been pregnant or using birth control pills? Hormonal changes can sometimes cause or exacerbate melasma.

Since your concern is melasma, first I would recommend that you see a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who can advise you. Depending on the depth and extent of the pigmentation problems, you may require just a bleaching agent (like hydroquinone), or the addition of retinoids or steroids. Chemical peels (like the Obagi Blue Peel) can also help. Multiple treatments may be required to remove all of the damaged skin.

Any one of these treatments will also benefit your fine lines and wrinkles.

Sorry, I wish that I could be of more help with product or procedural recommendations, but I think it would be better for you to see a licensed medical professional. I want you to get the best care!

I went to a few dermatologists and one recommended Nu Derm and the other recommended Condition and Enhance Surgical since I have dry/normal skin. Now I'm reading about ZO Skin Health... In the past, I used a 6% hydroquinone cream from an esthetician but my melasma got worse. I think it's because they did not advise me to use a sunscreen that contained zinc oxide.

I've read so many good things about the Obagi products and would really like to know which line to start with. I'm Asian, in my mid 40's with medium tone skin. My melasma isn't super bad but it's getting worse. I would also like to address my fine lines/wrinkles and I think my skin's little dull.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Michelle

Hi, Irene:
As you probably know, Stieva is a Mexican brand of tretinoin which comes in various strengths, just like Retin-A. You're using the most potent strength. It is very similar to the retinoic acid that Dr. Obagi uses in his own practice. If you have been using this product for a while, your skin is probably accustomed to it and having regular facials should not be a problem. If you are having "peel" type treatments, you may want to stop 2-3 days before the treatment. Always let your skincare technician know products you have been using. Although not harmful, the skin can become temporarily more red and take longer to neutralize. Informing the technician will give him or her a heads-up as to how your skin may respond, and the tech can be prepared to remove the product earlier than normal, if necessary. Microdermabrasion can be performed if the skin is not visibly irritated at the time of the service. If your skin feels irritated or shows signs of irritation, wait a few days for the skin to calm down before a procedure.

If you're working and communicating with a professional that you know and trust, you should be fine.

I think that I should possibly jumpstart my skin with the Shock Program.

Can you explain exactly how the products are used, AM PM, and which days
Clear and Exforderm Forte? Can a Vit.C antioxident be used AM before sunblock, & which days?
How long do you follow this before moving to a Maintenance??

Thank you,

Hoe do you subscribe to the RSS feed to get new information/blogs, etc. All the blogs I am reading are from 2009, are there any new from 2010?

Appreciate your information. I will be needing some information later and hope you will be able to help me out.

Thanks so much,

Hi, Judi:

It depends on what products you are now using as part of your maintenance regimen. I'm assuming that you've achieved great results and have already cut back on some Obagi products. Obagi Nu-Derm and ZO Skin Health were both developed by Dr. Obagi, so the two lines are consistent with his philosophy. The two companies are separate, however. Dr. Obagi developed ZO products partially because he wanted a maintenance regimen for lifelong healthy skin. I'll ask our medical aesthetician to contact you and give you a recommended regimen. First, though, she'll probably want to know more about your skin type. Thanks for asking.
